A bone fracture is like an orthopedic heart attack. Our goal is to screen and assess patients for risk factors to prevent bone fractures. Comprehensive management is important to success of the bone health patient.
Importance of Bone Health
Osteoporosis is a silent disease. Until a bone breaks most people are unaware they have this disease. According to statistics from the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 54 million people in the United States have osteoporosis and/or low bone mass, which places you at risk for osteoporosis. Statistics state that 1 out of 2 women and 1 out of 4 men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends all women age 65 and older be screened for osteoporosis. Men should be screened after age 70. This is too late. If a patient has risk factors, including age, race, lifestyle choices (such as a sedentary lifestyle or tobacco use, among others) and certain medical conditions or treatments, then he or she should be screened for osteoporosis.
